We left the museum at about 16:30 and made our way back to the car park at the 'Jefferson Arms' for another nights free parking. Upon our arrival we discovered we were not to be on our own tonight as there were already three other motorhomes. Within about half an hour we all did a bit of re-parking in turn, mainly because the owners of a campervan realised they had blocked in two other vehicles.

This evenings meal was Hunters Chicken for us both plus a couple of glasses of wine, costing more than I'd expect to pay for good glug in a pub. But never the less an enjoyable evening.

Tomorrow we head down the road to a campsite on the edge of York for a couple of nights before venturing out in to the sticks.

The airfield has a large race track, which is frequently used for drag racing and other motorsport events. In November 1966, Italian motor scooter rider Alberto Ancillotti on his Lambretta bike established the 106 mph terminal speed record at this venue. In the 1970s the airfield was the outdoor location for a series of Oh No, It’s Selwyn Froggit! a situation comedy on British television.

During filming of a Top Gear segment filmed at the airbase on 20 September 2006, Richard Hammond was injured in the crash of the jet-powered car he was piloting. He was travelling at 288 mph (463 km/h) at the time of the crash.
