TUESDAY 8-09-20

It was another completely wrong weather forecast from the BBC, but thankfully in our favour. Instead of it being cloudy and breezy we had a lovely sunny day, and what a difference it makes. I had to do some chores including hanging out the washing I did last night on the folding clothes airer I bought along with us.

After a short bus trip we arrived in Sheringham at about 10:25. In my opinion it's much nicer than Cromer, and didn't seem as busy. It's not somewhere I will return to, but it's nice enough, and the sunshine helped.

Information courtesy of the internet:

This busy little resort is centred on a bustling High Street, which has a neat clock tower at one end and the seafront at the other. The railway arrived in 1887, and squares of holidaymakers’ houses soon sprang up round the old fishing village, some of whose cottages survive at the seaward end of the High Street.

Sheringham still has a small fleet of fishing boats, which go out after lobsters and crabs. When not at sea, they are drawn up on the beach alongside the old lifeboat shed. The modern lifeboat is kept at the western end of the promenade.

We decided to have lunch before catching the 13:15 train to Holt. We'd considered fish and chips again until we saw that all the shops were cash-only. So that was that. There's no way we would buy food from people who handled cash as well as food. A short distance from the railway station we came across a 'pie and mash' shop, and in we went. I have to say whilst it wasn't fine dining it filled a gap and it was very acceptable. Two steak & kidney pies, mushy peas, mashed potato, gravy, one beer and a coffee came to just over seventeen pounds, and we were happy with that.
